On Saturday, 21 February 2026, Susan Gomersall will present an online lecture via Zoom, organised by the Hajji Baba Club.
The presentation — Tribal Tales: Every Rug Tells a Story — draws on Susan’s extensive travels throughout Central and South Asia from the 1970s through the early 2000s. Over decades of field experience buying, selling, handling and studying rugs and kilims in small villages, she developed a deep understanding of how tribal identity, livelihood, and culture are reflected in weaving.
Gomersall will discuss how tribal rugs functioned as essential household objects — used for sleeping, eating, and prayer — and how their size, shape, patterns and weaving techniques often make it possible to identify the tribe that produced them.
Susan was born in England and holds a postgraduate degree in Fine Arts from the University of Reading. After moving to the United States in the 1980s, she opened Tribal Rug Gallery in Brooklyn, NY in 2001; she now operates Kea Kilims and Carpets in Hudson, NY. She is also the author of Kilim Rugs: Tribal Tales in Wool.
