Opening lecture: A Collection of Anatolian Carpets
Lecture by Dr. Michael Buddeberg, Sunday 11 January 2026, 16:00

The opening lecture of the 2026 Carpet Diem program is devoted to a private but carefully developed collection of Anatolian carpets assembled by Dr. Michael Buddeberg over a period of roughly forty years. The focus lies on village and nomadic carpets woven in Anatolia during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Unlike Caucasian carpets, whose visual impact is often immediate, these Anatolian pieces reveal their qualities gradually. Their aesthetic strength lies in subtle relationships between pattern, color, and proportion, which require time and attentive viewing. The collection comprises fewer than two dozen carpets, but each piece has its own distinct acquisition history.

In the lecture, selected carpets are presented alongside comparative examples from the scholarly literature.
