Albert Karmely (1926–2015) was a renowned expert in antique rugs. Born in Meshad, Iran, into a family of rug dealers, he studied Economics in Europe and spoke six languages. After WWII, he joined the family business in Milan before returning to Iran, where he established a major export warehouse and a rug-cleaning factory. As an advisor to Iran’s Sherkat Farshe Company, he expanded internationally, opening showrooms in Milan, Frankfurt, and New York. In 1985, he launched a prestigious Madison Avenue gallery with the largest antique carpet collection.
