Foundation ‘churuk’ in small area. This exceptional rug is almost identical to the well-known example illustrated by Ford, Oriental Carpet Design, no.603 (as Feraghan) and Aschenbrenner, Oriental Rugs Volume 2: Persian, no.65 (as Malayer influenced by Feraghan). Our rug has the more pleasing feature of a yellow- ground central medallion as opposed to the dark blue of the published rug.

Very slight wear in field and losses to sides. This has one of the rarest elem designs. See Hofmeister, Turkoman Carpets in Franconia, no. 23, Tzareva, Rugs & Carpets from Central Asia, no. 50 (Museum of Ethnography, St. Petersburg) and Jourdain, Oriental Rugs volume 5: Turkoman, no. 63 for related elems although not with the ayna gul field as here.

DESCRIPTION: An impressive Yomut Turkmen main carpet, Turkmenistan first half 19th century, 11ft.1in. x 6ft.2in. 3.38m. x 1.88m. £2500-3500
Slight even wear overall, marginally heavier top end field, small slight stain right centre main border. This extremely handsome Yomut carpet has the palette of eight colours found on comparatively few examples on those usually among the earliest – violet brown (field), red, apricot, dark and light blue, green, dark brown and ivory.
