TMA/SC’s Anniversary Mini – Symposium & Banquet Luncheon will take place 19 August 2023 at Spice Affair Indian Restaurant, 50 N. La Cienega Blvd. Ste. 120, Beverly Hills 90211.

  • 10 am “Indian Textiles: 1,000 Years of Art and Design” with Lee Talbot, Curator, The Textile Museum Collection. The exhibition Indian Textiles: 1,000 Years of Art and Design, held at The George Washington University Museum and The Textile Museum in 2022, celebrated Indian artists’ extraordinary achievements in textile production and design. This colorfully illustrated lecture will provide an overview the exhibition, which presented the textiles in three thematic sections corresponding to the predominate ornamental elements traditionally used by Indian textile makers: abstract, floral, and figurative.

  • 11:15 “How We Look at Turkish Carpets: James F. Ballard and a New Way of Collecting” with Prof. Walter B. Denny, U. Massachusetts, Amherst. In this illustrated talk Walter Denny will focus on carpets from the Ottoman Empire acquired by American collector James Ballard, and how his collection, today divided between the Saint Louis Art Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, has influenced a century of American carpet collecting and changed the way we look at carpets made in Anatolian workshops, villages, and nomadic encampments.
