It reviews the development of a type of rug that, in spite of its old age of more than 2500 years, is hardly known. This history is based on a recent research by art-historian Koos de Jong into representations of saddle rugs; not only in Chinese painting, but also in sculpture and the applied arts. By comparison of this wealth of images with the published preserved saddle rugs a useful typology has been developed. The results of his research will be published in Hali Magazine and later in a book.
