Stefano Ionescu is recognized as an independent scholar specializing in Oriental carpets, with a particular focus on Anatolian rugs preserved in Transylvania. Over nearly two decades, he has made notable contributions to this field.
To explore the Anatolian origin of these rugs and their presence in Transylvania, Ionescu authored Antique Ottoman Rugs in Transylvania. This comprehensive study includes the entire collection of the Black Church and key examples from churches and museums across Romania and beyond. The work received the Romanian Academy Prize for Art History, a rare distinction in rug literature.
In 2011, Ionescu was honored with the Joseph V. McMullan Award for Scholarship and Stewardship in Islamic Rugs & Textiles.
