Press Release Nagel Auction
Classic Rugs at the 48th Special Auction of Collectors Carpets Collectors Carpets from the most important countries of origin will be up for auction in the accustomed wide variety at Nagel Auktionen on May 8, 2007. As far as the collector quality and age of the carpets is concerned, this selection is clearly distinct from the goods offered at liquidations of well-known carpet sellers in Stuttgart and environs. The 48th Special Auction of Collectors Carpets and Ethnologica will include considerably earlier pieces rarely found on the free market. These include a Coptic fragment whose pile is in very good condition and which was woven in Egypt about 1600 years ago (dimensions: 30 x 34 cm, estimate € 1,000). Graphically impressive is a Caucasian shield carpet from around 1750, which was acquired in Berlin around 1900 and has since been in private ownership (dimensions: 244 x 154 cm, estimate € 20,000). Sensationally fresh colours are evinced by an approx. 200-year-old tulip Ladik carpet from Anatolia (dimensions: 172 x 115 cm, estimate € 6,000). In the Caucasus, there is still very typical knotting work to be found, as is seen in a green Karachopf Kazak from the nineteenth century. Collectors of Central Asian Carpets will also find what they are looking for at Nagels. There will be some major early Turkmen carpets from the Teke, Jomud and Ersari to be had. European tapestries will broaden the spectrum, including large-scale works with bucolic scenes after David Teniers. In addition, there will be several tall, rectangular tapestries with floral decorations which were once hung “entre fenêtre”, that is, on the wall space between windows.
Selection from the preview.
