On 25 April 2026, Kristal Hale will present an online lecture “Conserving and Displaying Carpet and Textile Masterpieces in the David Geffen Galleries” hosted by the Hajji Baba Club. The talk, held via Zoom at 1:00pm ET, focuses on the conservation and display of major textile works at Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).
The lecture centres on the installation of selected works in the museum’s new David Geffen Galleries, designed by Peter Zumthor. A key focus is the challenge of displaying sensitive textiles in a light-filled architectural setting, and the collaboration between conservators, curators, and architects to address these conditions.
Among the works discussed are the LACMA Ardabil Carpet, a Paracas mantle from Peru dating nearly 2,000 years, and Kashmir shawls shown alongside related European material.
The Ardabil carpets are a pair of twins. One of the carpets are exhibited in Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the other in Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
Kristal Hale is Textile Conservator at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. She holds an MA in textile conservation from the Bern University of Applied Sciences in collaboration with the Abegg-Stiftung.
