Inspired by paintings of oriental rugs

Suzanne Spahi, a mosaic artist and mosaic instructor from Montreal, was inspired by a watercolor painting of an oriental rug, when she decided to realize her idea about intrepretation of oriental rugs into mosaics. Suzanne has always been fascinated by the colors, patterns and the mystery of tribal rugs.

“For me it is an addictive challenge interpreting oriental rugs into mosaics” said Suzanne Spahi to Jozan Magazine. “One of my first works in 2007, an intrepretation of a Kazak rug, was exhibited at the Ravenna Mosaic Festival in 2009. Later – another of my mosaics, a ‘Shaggy Anatolian rug‘ won a prize at the Montreal International Design show in May 2011. This mosaic was inspired by an Anatolian rug seen at the ‘Flying Tribal Rugs’ exhibition in Otranto, Italy, in 2008″ she continued.

“Sartirana Textile Show has accepted that I exhibit my oriental rug mosaics at the fair in Italy in September. But the date is exactly at a time when I am having a special guest from England to teach at my mosaic school. So I hope for an invitation next year” said Suzanne Spahi.
