Tschebull Antique Carpets was founded in 1982 in Darien, Connecticut by the husband and wife team of Mike and Inge Tschebull. Over the 25 years of running their gallery, the Tschebull’s personally inspected each purchase to be sure each rug met their exacting standards.
Mike Tschebull authored the seminal “Kazak: Carpets of the Caucasus” in 1971, and continues to write, research, and lecture in the field of old rugs and carpets. The Tschebull’s are ready for the next chapter in their lives and while it will continue to include rugs, it will not be anchored in a retail rug shop.
The collection, comprised of approximately 200 rugs and carpets, consists mainly of antique rugs woven with natural dyes and well-sorted hand-spun yarn, with a few modern carpets rounding out the selection.
Highlights include a Fine 19th century Serapi Carpet, 11’3” x 8’8”, estimated to bring $12,000-15,000, and a 13’3” x 10’5” Mahal Sarouk Carpet, circa 1910, estimated to bring $10,000-15,000. A more reasonably priced Heriz Carpet, 10’7” x 8’1”, made in Persia in the early 20th century, is estimated to bring $3,000-5,000 and a small, 5’6” x 3’10”, colorful 19th century Karapinar Rug from Turkey is estimated at $1,500-2,000.
“This is an excellent opportunity for homeowners looking to purchase a fine Oriental Carpet in very good condition,” commented Oriental Rug expert and auctioneer, Michael Grogan, “Old hand woven carpets are more than floor coverings. They are works of art that retain their value and can be passed from generation to generation.”
The sale will include something for everyone’s taste and budget, from fine room size carpets and runners to small area rugs, with presale estimates ranging from $500 to $15,000. The auction exhibition is open to the public and will begin on Friday, May 2nd. Hours are Friday through Monday 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.; The public is invited to attend a Gallery Tour and Reception with Mike Tschebull and Michael Grogan on Sunday, May 4th from 4 – 6 p.m. Both experts will conduct group tours around the gallery to describe some of the highlight rugs and to answer any questions clients may have.
