The Weaves of the Dragon – Chinese Carpets of the Imperial Dynastie

The exhibition presents Chinese carpets from the imperial period, drawn from the MITA collection. It includes just over forty carpets made in China, together with a similar number of works from present-day Xinjiang, especially from Kashgar, Yarkand, and Khotan.

The display follows the historical route from the Central Asian border regions into the interior of China. It allows visitors to observe how carpet designs, materials, and colors change from the oasis cities to the imperial centers, while certain traditions remain consistent.

Common motifs include Buddhist and solar symbols, lattice-based decorative systems, and imperial color schemes dominated by yellow and blue. In later carpets, animal and mythological figures appear more frequently. Large imperial carpets and early fragments illustrate the highest level of court production.
