Jonathan Clark Fine Art in Chelsea will host an exhibition “Berber – Historic Rugs from the High Atlas” 23 January – 8 February 2013.
The collection of vintage Berber rugs are collected from Morocco and the High Atlas mountains. Prices will range from £3,000 to £12,000.
Despite of the ancient design the rugs could easily be taken for pieces of modern abstract art. “It isn’t hard to see why the Bauhaus movement and artists such as Paul Klee took inspiration from them” said Jonathan Clark.
Isolated in the High Atlas, the rugs have developed quite separately from other traditions of carpet making.
“It wasn’t until the beginning of the last century that much attention was paid to the primitive arts, which explains why so few genuinely antique examples of this type survive. The exhibition offers a opportunity to appreciate these works of art from a new perspective.” said Jonathan Clark.
Jonathan Clark Fine Art is best known as a gallery for Modern British Art.
