Sothebys Arts of the Islamic World & India including Fine Rugs & Carpets 10 June 2020. Lot 279. A LARGE BERGAMA RUG, WEST ANATOLIA mid 19th century of Ghirlandaio design. Approximately 231 by 202 cm. Property from Eberhart Herrmann. Condition: Full pile, 3-6 mm in depth, lustrous wool, overall in very good condition. Ends taped on reverse with cotton herringbone tape to re-inforce. Lovely generous size and glowing colour. Estimate 18,000 – 22,000 GBP. Lot Sold 25,000 GBP

THE VOLKMANN BERGAMA RUG, WEST ANATOLIA, late 17th or early 18th century, approximately 222 by 164cm; 7ft. 3in., 5ft. 5in. Condition: Pile generally good to fair overall, ranging from approx 2 mm. down to knotbars. The brighter red visible in the image is restoration, in spot areas across the centre of the rug and in the central area of the main field, and bottom half of right hand border. The outer guard stripes are mainly reconstructed, with some original areas in the upper end guards. Estimate 30,000 – 40,000 GBP. Lot Sold 50,000 GBP.
