ICOC Istanbul announcement

It's not just collectors and aficionados of antique rugs who will attend the 11th ICOC in Istanbul, most modern carpet dealers secretly have an interest -- and even a passion! -- for great antique carpets. Many of our design inspirations today are descendents of this heritage that began centuries ago. The International Conference on Oriental Carpets (ICOC) will hold its 11th conference in Istanbul from April 19-22. Over 700 antique carpets from museum and private collections and dating from the 14th-19th centuries will be displayed. Sixty speakers from all over the world will give informative slide presentations about the history of weaving, origins of patterns, study of materials, etc.

Dennis Dodds, who is owner of the New York International Carpet Show (www.NYICS.com), is Secretary-general of the all-volunteer, non-profit educational association. It is very likely that your expenses may be deductible if you work in the Oriental carpet industry. Check with your tax accountant. Receptions, educational talks, fabulous rugs, an exciting Dealers' Fair with undiscovered treasures, camaraderie and legendary Turkish hospitality all point to a fabulous festival that will truly be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Regular Full Registration of $450 will be offered until 31 January if you book the Conference Headquarters Swissotel overlooking the Bosphorus or four nights at the discounted conference rate. Otherwise, the Late Registration rate of $525 applies. Spouses/companions may attend for $150.

On Thursday, April 19th, the Private Collections Exhibiton opens at 2 pm. At 5 pm at the Swissotel, there is a Special Opening Lecture by Prof. Walter B. Denny and the Gala Opening Preview Reception and Dealers' Fair begins at 6.30 pm. Preparations for world-class exhibitions at the TIEM, Topkapi and Vakiflar Museums are now taking place in Istanbul with a flurry of well-organized activity.
