In this lecture, Anita Cook, Associate Professor of Anthropology at the Catholic University of America, will focus on the human representations found in Huari textiles and ceramic painting and their transformation into cosmological beings. Referencing the tunics and mantle pieces in the exhibition Gods and Empire: Huari Ceremonial Textiles, along with ceramic painting, Ms. Cook will explore the imagery and how each medium possesses its own idiom, paying particular attention to imagery of processions that include sacrifice and blood letting, and how it represents the Huari belief in the regenerative quality of the human body and sustaining the larger community. Northern Lights: Textile Arts of Finland and Sweden, a Textile Museum Study Tour to Finland and Sweden with an excursion to Tallinn, Estonia, will give participants a unique opportunity to explore a fascinating mix of tradition and innovation in textiles. We will see unique medieval survivals of dress items and furnishings as well as superb carpets, tapestries and silks from trade and diplomacy during Sweden's days of empire, a strong and colorful rural weaving tradition and vibrant contemporary textile expression in tapestry and sculptural forms. An optional trip extension will take participants above the Artic Circle in Sweden for the summer solstice celebration and visits with Sami crafts persons. Study Tour leader Dr. Desiree Koslin, a native Swede with Finnish heritage, received her initial textile training in the Hemslojden tradition and at the Libraria, an atelier for ecclesiastical textiles.
