Soumak carpet (92) - Hagop Manoyan Antique Rugs![]() NAME: Soumak carpet (92) CATEGORY: Kilims,Flatweaves ORIGIN/TYPE: Soumak AGE CLASSIFICATION: pre-1910 ID(Jozan): no. 93686 DESCRIPTION: Soumak carpet from Eastern Caucasus.Soumaks are flatweaves but they are not kilims.This one is circa 1875,measures 8´.0"x7´.1" (244x216cm) which is an attractive squarish size.The colors are nice with a touch of fuchsine.The piece has three very rare medallions one in light green and the other two in blue.One of the blue medallions have abrash which means change of color.It is original,it doesn´t mean that the color is changed or restored but the weaver decided to put a different shade there.The medallions are separated with four small medallions in blue and yellow.The red field has four corner panels and interesting details.The main border is unique and is considered one of the most attractive borders among Soumak carpets.It is very sophisticated and meticulously drawn.The ivory minor borders which are next to the main border are common,so is the outer red and brown running dog border.The piece has its original knotted ends but the brown is corroded and has some wear.It is a very nice Soumak piece with great quality.
