This circa 1880 Serab runner measures 3’8” X 13’5” (115 x 410 cm). It is an absolutely fantastic camel hair runner. There are seven diamonds up the center, each with a different motif. The field is worked in various colored blossoms in blue, green, aubergine, and rose etc. all very asymmetrically drawn. The corners are worked in a striped design on an ivory ground ala Genji. The runner has a single reciprocal border in blue and brown and is nestled ever so nicely inside a wide camel apron. There are two little men at the top of the rug. Believe it or not, they remind me of Tyrolean mountaineers in short pants and little black hats. This is very cute. This rug is it essentially in perfect condition and is at least 130 years old. This Fereghan dated 1874 measures 4’2” X 6’5” (128 x 198 cm). This is the finest woven Fereghan I have ever seen. It has a very intricate Herati design on a navy blue ground with a rust red diamond medallion containing writing and a date of 1874. Triangles from the border going into the field are filled with flowers in ivory, rust, and pistachio green. The major border has a meandering vine and flower design on a pistachio green ground. It has two reciprocal borders of flowers and vines on a terra-cotta ground. The inner border has flower heads on an ivory ground. All the pistachio green in the rug is eroded giving further evidence of the age of this rug. The rug looks very much like a Quashki but the back does not. This antique rug made in India in the last quarter of the 19th century is signed Ghazan. It measures 10’2” x 16’2”. It is a fantastic rug with a light sky blue field with images of Sheikh Masjid Mosque at Karunagappally Kollam in Kerala India at either end of the field sitting on two raised platforms with calligraphy. It has a medium-sized central medallion in very pale blue with pulled floral motif in pale gold and ivory. There are four indigo colored urns containing lovely floral motifs. The field has a very loose scrolling vine and flower motif which looks rather Mogulish. There are four repeated inscriptions in the field at either side of the medallion as well as in the base of the minarets flanking the Mosque. Some of the browns show slight erosion which is evidence of the rug’s age. The navy blue field is surrounded by a garland of flowers with a beautiful bonsai tree in a flowerpot on a table serving as the center medallion. It is surrounded by 16 butterflies flitting hither, tither, and yon and four clumps of flowering foliage each containing a very happy appearing bluebird. The main border carries through the color of the field and is delineated by a double strip of bamboo which serves as a frame for the field. The field contains incense burners, riotous groups of foliage including peonies and leafs which spill into the field and to the outer edge of the rug. As far as I’m concerned this rug is essentially perfect. It is made of the finest Manchester wool which has the feel of velvet. At the bottom of the rug there are two small Chinese characters that look like signatures to me. This is the only Chinese rug I’ve seen with signatures. The ends and sides are complete. This Ningxia Chinese Oriental rug measures 6 feet 3 inches X 9 feet 2 inches (192 x 280 cm). It has 9 five toed dragons in blue on an orange gold ground. Sacred mountain meditation points quarter the rug and are in every corner, for a total of eight. The minor border consists of blue waves encompassed by a a second minor border with various colored cartouches with various cloud motifs all enclosed with a major border in the wave motif. The color palette consists of three shades of blue, to shades of green, silver, orange, and a very pale aubergine. At the top of the rug is a blue cartouche consisting of three Chinese characters which say ‘Pavilion of infinite light’ which refers to a room in the Golden Pavilion in Yellow Monastery in the Forbidden City which was built to hold the remains of the sixth Panchen Erdeni who died on the second day of the 11th month of the 45th year of the reign of Emperor Qianlong which relates to the year 1780.

This circa 1860 antique Peking Chinese rug measures 14’0” X 15’5” (425 x 471 cm). It has a navy blue ground with six flower wreaths containing an antlered dear. There are three up each side. There are two medallions composed of circling cranes whose tips of their outspread wings almost touch to form the circle, filled with what appeared to be flowering fruits stems. The field is filled with an amazingly drawn cloud motif in ivory, lighter blue and a couple shades of light brown. Between the upper and lower stag medallions and below the circling crane medallion is a beautifully drawn fantastic butterfly, one at each end, whose tail extensions morph into clouds. The minor border is a meandering vine and flower motif on an ivory ground. The major border is a paler blue than the field containing ivory swans or cranes. This rug is woven with the finest possible wool that money can buy. It has the look and feel of velvet. There really is none better. The condition of the rug is essentially perfect, with one or two places that are slightly low. These low areas cannot be seen when looking over the rug but only when you look into it. This rug can be described in words of one syllable. It screams ‘I am to die for!’ In over 40 years in this business I truly have never seen anything even approaching this rug.
