Auction Price Database category: Uzbek
LOT: 1748 RUG NAME: Nurata AGE: second half 19th century ESTIMATE: 2,000 - 4,000 GBP SOLD: DESCRIPTION: 1748. An exceptional Nurata
suzani, in silk basma and tambour
stitches on a cotton ground, Uzbekistan,
second half 19th century, 99in. x 68in.
251cm. x 173cm. Some small areas of loss
to the embroidery, particularly in the yellow
floral spray top right corner, slight staining
lower right border, some slight discolouration
and minor insect holes in places. Original
ikat binding, re-backed with plain linen.
Although suzanis with disparate floral sprays
were not exclusively made in Nurata (there
are Bokhara examples, for instance),
nevertheless it is with this particular area
that this design type is most often associated.
The single boteh with a chequer-board
field is a motif often found on Nurata suzanis,
for instance Black and Loveless,
Embroidered Flowers from Thrace to
Tartary, no. 24.The quality of drawing and
the richness of colour in the present
example are outstanding. £2000-4000AUCTIONHOUSE: Netherhampton Salerooms AUCTION: Carpets, Rugs and Textiles LOCATION: Salisbury, UK DATE: 14-05-2009 WEB SITE: http://www.salisburyauctioncentre.co.uk PHOTO COURTESY: Netherhampton Salerooms Other categories: Anatolian, Balouch, Baluch, Caucasian, Caucasus, Chinese, East Turkestan, English, European, India, Indian, Kirgiz, Kurdish, Mongolian, Moroccan, Native American, Norwegian, Persian, Tibetan, Turkmen, Uzbek,
