LOT: 1204 RUG NAME: Azerbaijan kelleh AGE: dated 1820 ESTIMATE: 3,000 - 5,000 GBP SOLD: DESCRIPTION: Lot No 1204
An exceptional Azerbaijan Harshang pattern kelleh, north west Persia dated [1]235 [AH] (1819-20 AD), 16ft. x 7ft.8in. 4.88m. x 2.34m. Overall even wear, small reweaves. The carpet has been subjected to several small cuts with kinks removed; however, none of the cuts seems to run either the entire length or width of the carpet and it does not seem to have been reduced in size, therefore. The exact origin of this well-known group of carpets remains controversial. There are closely related examples with jufti knotting that would now probably be assigned to Khorasan with few dissenting voices (and it is interesting to note in this context the 19th century Baluchi carpets, sometimes attributed in our view incorrectly to the Timuri, which have the ‘flaming palmette’ as one of their principal motifs). However, the present example has a structure, including symmetric knotting, that clearly indicates an Azerbaijani origin and like a number of carpets from the same region and period, seems based on 16th-17th century ‘vase’ carpets from Kerman. Among analogous carpets in the literature, the example formerly in the Bernheimer Collection (see, inter alia, Bennett, Rugs and Carpets of the World, p. 229, lower right), which has unusual calligraphic cartouches of poetry repeated in the field, has a closely related field design and is dated 1223 [AH] (1808-9 AD). Another carpet with an almost identical field but with an unusual white ground border, is in the Cincinnati Art Museum, gift of Mrs. Benjamin Moore, inv. no. 1946.60. This latter carpet is illustrated by Daniel. S. Walker in Oriental Rugs in Cincinnati Collections, no. 23, where it is described as ‘18th-19th century’; measuring 20ft.5in. x 7ft.7in. (6.22m. x 2.31m.), it is in very poor condition (‘worn, patched, considerable re-knotting’). Interestingly, it is described as being on an all-cotton foundation; if correct, this would suggest a later date than as catalogued – our rug is on all-wool foundation. Note the unusual calligraphic cartouche in the top left corner of our carpet.
Estimates: £3000 to £5000
