We sell only old rugs, beautiful old rugs woven with natural dyes and well-sorted hand-spun yarn, old rugs with character, art value, good color harmonies, and in good enough condition so that you can see the effects of light reflecting off the wool surface.
Although we have some European, Turkish, and 19th century Chinese rugs in stock, most of what we offer is from Iran, from before 1930, which we think is an accurate cut-off date for quality products from the rug weaving cultures in the Middle East, Central Asia, and China. We always have a few old kilims.
We sell some Ushaks and Tabrizes that are “soft” in tonality, but most of our rugs have color. We think color is the main attraction.
We act as principals rather than brokers, which means that in our gallery, you see inventory that we own. Our inventory provides ample choice: we have more room-sized carpets, ca. 7’ x 10’ to 10’ x 14’, than any other format, but we stock rugs from 2’ x 3’ to about 13’ x 22’.
The divide between “collectible” antique oriental rugs and those which are strictly floor covering is often blurry. We like to think that many of our rugs are of collector quality.
Mr. Tschebull authored the seminal Kazak: Carpets of the Caucasus in 1971, and continues to write, do research, and lecture in the field of old rugs and carpets.
