Sotheby’s auction ‘Important Carpets from the William A. Clark Collection’ 5 June 2013 in New York brought a world record for a carpet sold at an auction. A 17th century Kerman carpet ‘The Clark Sickle-Leaf Carpet’, lot 12, sold for an exceptional price of $33.8 million.

‘Selling the Clark Sickle-Leaf Carpet for a record-breaking price of more than three times the previous auction record for a carpet has unquestionably been the highlight of my 30 year career’ said Mary Jo Otsea.

Totally this auction brought $43.8 million, which is far above the pre-sale estimate of $9.6 million. All 25 carpet lots were sold and all lots achieved a price far above their estimates.

The auction results can be found online at www.sothebys.com.

A special documentary photo exhibition showing carpets from the Major Bode Collection is a part of the ongoing Berlin Rugs & Textile Exhibition at the Alte Münze in Berlin. This special photo exhibition is especially relevant because the Bode Collection actually was stored ind the vaults in the Alte Münze but was destroyed in a bomb raid on 11 March 1945. The research, planning, and mounting of this impressive exhibition has been done by Silke Braeuer and Birgit Voß.

The exhibiton also includes, besides the black and white photos, an impressive real carpet, a reproduction of a twin to the Bode Animal Carpet. This twin is in LACMA’s possession and has been source for the reproduction owned and now exhibited by N. Vrouyr, Antwerpen.

The pre-opening of the Berlin Antique Rugs & Textile Exhibition took place Thursday evening 30 May 2013 and was well attended with circa 120 visitors. The fair opened for the public Friday 31 May at 11.00 and the first hours were quite busy for the 25 antique rug and textile dealers.

The quality of the exhibited rugs and textiles is as expected high and the dealers seem quite happy about the professional organisation behind this fair. BARE is organized by Carpet Collector and Tim Steinert and his team are doing an excellent job to keep both visitors and dealers happy.

The sale of lot 16, a 19th century Talish rug

The highlight of this auction was lot 197, a ca. 1800 Shakhrisyabz Suzani, shown on the frontpage of Rippon Boswell’s catalogue. This unique museum piece from an old private Munich collection achieved the highest hammerprice for a Suzani ever seen in an auction € 115,000.

Detail of lot 197, a circa 1800 Shakhrisyabz Suzani

Another ca. 1800 Shakhrisyabz Suzani, lot 157, achieved a hammerprice of € 36,000, showing that such textiles can prevail in a market becoming increasingly selective. Following this trend a Bokhara Suzani, lot 169 achieved € 8,500, a Karshi Suzani, lot 126 achieved € 8,000, a Nurata Suzani, lot 29 achieved € 7,500, and another Nurata Suzani, lot 196 was won by a bidder for € 11,000.

Suzani’s in the exhibition room

Two other striking textiles, lot 240, a Azeri flatweave achieved € 5,000, and lot 54, a rare Mexican Satillo Serape, achieved
€ 10,000.

Among the Turkmen pieces only the cheaper ones reached their estimates, while almost all the more expensive pieces achieved hammerprices below their estimates. Lot 19 and 158, two Tekke main carpets, achieved both €10,000 with reservation, and even hard-to-find tentbands like lot 61 and lot 106 did not reach their limits of € 4,000 and € 8,000. Lot 19, a recently auctioned Salor main carpet from the Werner Loges Collection, did not reach the estimated € 15,500 and achieved a hammerprice of € 12,000.

The era of large room-size carpets seems to be terminated by embargoes and other trade impediments. Two Chinese room-size carpets, lot 32 and lot 33, were only conditionally sold for € 4,400 and 4,100 € (HP). Two old Heriz carpets, lot 24 and 146, did not attract any bidders.

Preview exhibition. Lot 55(left), a Chinese Kansu carpet and lot 99, a Khotan carpet

A great Ningxia column carpet, lot 65, achieved € 7,000 compared with it’s estimate € 8,500 and lot 201, a Ningxia did not reach it’s limit of € 14,000.

Even the interest for Caucasian rugs was weak in this auction, a Karabagh Kelley, lot 114, formerly sold at Christie’s in London in 2003, achived € 25,000 compared with an estimated price of 35,000 €. A Karachoph Kasak, Lot 180, was sold for € 19,000, again lower than the estimated price of 24,000 € and a monumental Shusha Kelly, lot 90, which was estimated at € 17,500, only achieved 13,000 €, which not previously would have been possible.

Among the Anatolian pieces, lot 46, a 18th century Oushak kilim estimated at € 46,000 did not reach it’s limit and lot 72, a Yatak was propably overestimated. A rare Oushak kilim, lot 202, changed hands for € 5,000 (HP).

An outstanding and rare piece lot 150, a first half 19th century Caucasian sumakh from the Moghan region and a masterpiece of textile nomadic art missed it’s excessive estimate of 45,000 € and did not reach it’s limit. Also a Kurdish Kilim, lot 173, was probably set too expensive at 22,000 €.

Though, there were positve surprises too, lot 207, a beautiful Qashqa’i Kahn achieved a hammerprice of € 14,000, and lot 115, a large white-ground Mahal, rised from it’s estimate of € 4,500 to € 9,000 (HP)

Preview exhibition. Left in front lot 40, a Qashqa’i kilim

Among the Persian rugs and carpets a Tehran carpet estimated at € 13,500 achieved a hammerprice of € 11,000 while lot 153, a Ferahan rised from it’s estimate of € 9,500 to € 24,000 (HP).

Overall, this auction was not succesfull and pieces in the lower and middle price segment seem difficult to sell while unique textiles continue to achieve high prices.

The Antique Rug & Textile Show (ARTS) will return to San Francisco this fall, opening Thursday October 17, 2013. The show, now in its fifth year, is the largest of its type and the highlight of the year for American rug enthusiasts. The informal often festive tone of the show allows for a comfortable environment in which to browse some of the best antique collectible pieces available on the market.

“Visitors are encouraged to pre-register for the ARTS opening gala through the ARTS website, said Ben Banayan to Jozan Magazine and continued “ARTS employs the strategy that more is more. With a low fee structure for its pre-vetted group of exhibitors, it attracts not only the top dealers participating in international fairs but a host of smaller sellers with an equally high caliber of material if not the volume”.

This year, ARTS will be expanding its relationship with SFBARS, the San Francisco Bay Area Rug Society. In addition to co-sponsoring the annual ARTS exhibition, a collection of saddlebags in complete condition assembled from San Francisco Bay Area private collections, SFBARS will co-sponsor the ARTS Collector Show & Tell and will host their October speaker, Koos de Jong, a Dutch expert in Tibetan weaving, during ARTS at nearby Krimsa Gallery.

ARTS visitors can request a complimentary tour of the show. This is a great opportunity for both novices who would like to get more general information about antique rugs and ethnographic weavings or expert collectors searching for specific pieces or genres. Tours can be arranged with staff at the front desk or in the under $500 room. Hosted by Wesley Marquand of rugbooks.com, this room should be filled with various bargains for every budget and will be made up of pieces consigned by ARTS participants.

San Francisco is a vibrant, beautiful, and welcoming international city. Summer comes later to this city on the bay and October is generally sunny and beautiful. San Francisco has several great museums including the de Young and Asian Art Museum and the Bay area is the home to some of the best private collections of rugs and textiles in the world.

“ARTS actively encourages international visitors. If you would like information on where to stay during the show, ARTS events, or combining your trip to ARTS with other local attractions such as wine country in Napa Valley and Sonoma updates will be posted soon on the ARTS website. You may also inquire directly to us by email” said Ben Banayan.

The Textile Society of America has just announced that the proceedings and submitted manuscripts from their 13th Biennial Symposium ‘Textiles and Politics’, held in Washington DC 18-22 September 2012, are now public available through the University of Nebraska, Lincoln’s Digital Commons TSA Symposium Proceedings.

‘This offers students and researchers a rich source of information and the open access to our proceedings furthers TSA’s mandate to exchange and disseminate information about textiles worldwide’ said TSA’s Michele Hardy to Jozan Magazine.

The 13th Symposium explored the crossroads of textiles and politics and included lectures from more than hundred scholars. One of them, Elmira Gyul, Tashkent State University, who is a frequent author of articles published in Jozan Magazine, held an interesting lecture ‘Sogdian Textile Design: Political Symbols of an Epoch’. This article can be downloaded as a pdf file as well as the other articles and manuscripts.

The 9th edition of Sartirana Textile Show organized by Alberto Boralevi will take place 19-22 September 2013 at Sartirana Castle at the first floor of the Pila building. Jozan Magazine has asked Alberto Boralevi if he has any news about the coming show to share with Jozan’s readers.

“We are working hard to organize the show and we have already recieved several registrations by old and new dealers. At present we have the following names confirmed: David Sorgato (Milan), Serkan Sari (Karlsruhe), Franco dell’Orto (Venice), Foumani (Amsterdam), Tehrani (Hamburg), Mollaian (Ferrara), Igor Honkanen (Helsinki), Kamoo Gallery (Teheran), Kami Chanteh (Turin), Robin Parvisyar (Milan), Herbert Bieler (Vienna), Sadettin Ufuklar (Ravenna), Carpet Diem (Monfalcone), Alberto Boralevi (Florence), Mirco Cattai (Milan), Rillosi (Venice), Degiosa Art (Singapore). We are expecting that another 8-10 exhibitors will join the group in the next weeks” said Alberto Boralevi.

One of the new entries is Giuseppe (Pino) De Giosa, an Italian living in Singapore. Giuseppe (Pino) De Giosa is a well known collector of Tibetan rugs and South East Asian textiles who has recently moved into dealing. He will present some important Tibetan examples and a collection of rare Buthanese Rain Cloacks (charkab).

Sadettin Ufuklar will exhibit at STS 2013. Archive photo STS 2012.

Among the exhibitors in 2013 will be a very special stand run by a wine company, Conti Ducco of Franciacorta. This wine company will set set up a wine-tasting station just in the centre of the Show. “I am sure that many of our visitors and dealers will appreciate this very much” said Alberto Boralevi to Jozan Magazine.

The special non-sale exhibition at this years Sartirana Textile Show will be devoted to all kind of bags, town or tribal, for tent or saddle, for men or women and from any provenance and age. The exhibited bags will be loans from participating dealers and private collectors.”I’m also negotiating for having a very important and rare early piece from an Italian Museum which will be the gem of this exhibition” said Alberto Boralevi.

A second smaller exhibition is also planned but has not been finally corfirmed yet. Sartirana Textile Show 2013 will again include the popular Tea-Time-Textile-Talk and an International scholar has been invited by the organizers.

In two weeks the Berlin Antique Rug & Textile Exhibition BARE 2013 will open its gates. The fair is organized by Carpet Collector, the new magazine on antique rugs and textiles. BARE will offer something for both experts and beginners and anyone interested in culture and beautyful textiles are encouraged to attend. The consistently high standard of exhibitors guarantees that this event will appeal to well-versed collectors and connoisseurs and certainly also will infect newbies with the “rug virus”. “There were several reasons for choosing to hold the exhibition in Berlin. First of all, it is a city of superlatives that magically attracts tourists. Secondly, Berlin is home to many important museums, including the Museum of Islamic Art, which is just a short walk away from the Alte Münze, the venue for BARE.” Tim Steinert, editor-in-chief of Carpet Collector says.

Besides the fair itself there are other very interesting special exhibitions. Small group tours to the exhibition “Schicksalsnacht im Tresorraum der Alten Münze – Das Ende der bedeutenden Sammlung Bodes” (The Fateful Night in the Old Mint‘s Vault – The End of the Major Bode Collection) will be offered several times a day. These tours will be guided because the vaults in the old factory building are very difficult to reach.

Two sales exhibitions will accompany the fair: “Carpet Collections” where the organizers have selected several thematic collections and display them in a large exhibition room. This exhibition will showcase high-quality collector rugs and textiles. Especially geared towards the next generation of rug collectors is “Just for the fun”, featuring pieces in an affordable price range for younger rug enthusiasts.

VIP tickets for BARE 2013
Jozan draws 5 x 2 VIP-tickes for BARE 2013. The ticket is valid for all days of the exhibition (31. May to 2 June 2013) and also for the Pre-Opening event on Thursday 30 May from 18:00 to 21:00 which is on invitation only. To participate in the drawing simply write your contact information in this contact form and hit the send button. We will draw the 5 x 2 tickets on 22 May and send the tickets to the winners by mail.
As an extra offer to all who attend in this drawing we are also able to offer a free trial copy of Carpet Collector.
Good luck!

The planned International Congress on Azerbaijani Carpets in June 2013 in Baku was cancelled two weeks ago by the Minister of Culture. Many attendees were very disappointed by the fact that they both missed the congress and also their money for prepaid fly tickets.

But – when Roya Taghiyeva, Director of the Azerbaijani Carpet Museum, announced the cancellation, she also suggested an alternative cultural tour with the possibility to visit the carpet storages of the Azerbaijani Carpet Museum and the Museum of History, carpet workshops in Baku, and historical and natural sights of Baku and Sheki.

By a prompt initiative by Alberto Boralevi and Stefano Ionescu a program for this alternative carpet study tour is present.

“This tour is not the Congress, but it can still be very interesting, expecially for those who have not been in Azerbaijan before” said Alberto Boralevi to Jozan Magazine and continued “Our friend Stefano Ionescu, who has a great experience as organizer of rug study tours has drafted a program for 17-21 June 2013 working together with a Baku travel agency. There is a limited number of 25 participants and probably also someone who was not invited to the Congress could be interested in participating in this tour”.

There will be several interesting antique rug and textile fairs in the coming months both in Europe and USA. These fairs include BARE, KARMA, Sartirana Textile Show and ARTS SF.

Berlin Antique Rugs & Textile Exhibition 31 May – 2 June 2013

The very first edition of BARE, Berlin Antique Rugs & Textile Exhibition, will open for the public Friday 31 May 2013 at 11.00 am, and run through Sunday 2 June. The intentions with this fair are both to create a new venue for collectors and antique rug dealers in the Northern part of Europe but also to attract the public in Berlin and introduce them to the exciting passion of rug collecting. This fair is organized by Carpet Collector so expect a professionally organized and friendly event.

James Cohen will exhibit this circa 1850 Karachopf rug at BARE

The BARE will be held at the ‘Alte Münze’ and the former Berlin mint has a good reputation as an excellent exhibition building. The vaults in the Alte Münze are of historic significance. A special documentary photo exhibition will be devoted to their history. 17 important oversize carpets from the Bode Collection were stored in the ‘deep vault of the Reich mint’, but were destroyed following a bomb raid on 11 March 1945 and this was the end of the Bode Collection. Guided tours with small groups to the exhibition ‘The Fateful Night in the Old Mint‘s Vault – The End of the Major Bode Collection’ will be offered several times a day.

Beside the circa 25 dealers the “carpet press’ will be represented by Hali, Carpet Collector and Jozan Magazine which have stands on the first floor of the exhibition building.

While you are there a visit at the famous Museum for Islamic Art, located 20 minutes walk from the BARE, is a must.

KARMA London 6-8 June 2013

After Berlin next stop for the passionated collector is London where KARMA, Kensington Antique Rug Mercantile Association, from 6 to 8 June 2013 will hold the 6th edition of their small boutique fair with 10 antique rug and textile dealers. Once again this event will take place at 202 Kensington Church St. in London and will be concurrent with the Olympia Fine Art Fair. KARMA is organized by Rupert Smith.

Rupert Smith will exhibit this early 17th century Imperial throne rug at KARMA

Besides the dealers fair KARMA also includes a small lecture program. One of the lectures ‘Collecting rugs’ is given by James Cohen. James is truly ‘a nomadic dealer’ and will in 2013 exhibit at most of the mentioned antique rug fairs in this article BARE, KARMA and ARTS.

Sartirana Textile Show 19-22 September 2013

Alberto Boralevi has been organizer of Sartirana Textile show since 2005. This years show, with circa 25 International and Italian antique rug dealers will take place 19-22 September 2013 at Sartirana Castle, Sartirana, Lomellina, one hours drive from Milan.

Mirco Cattai in front of a 17th century Ushak Lotto. Archve photo Sartirana 2012

This show is known for the high standard of exhibited rugs and carpets and for it’s relaxed atmosphere. So expect plenty of time to pleasant conversations about rugs and life in general with the attending dealers.

Antique Rug & Textile Show 17-20 October 2013 in San Francisco

Since it’s start in 2009 ARTS, held at the Motel Capri, has become one of the major rug and textile event of the year and an important venue for collectors and antique rug dealers from around the world. The concept for ARTS is the same as for KARMA to keep dealer expenses low by exibiting in the dealers hotel rooms. This creates a special informal atmosphere appreciated by many of the dealers.

ARTS at the Motel Capri (archive photo)

A special opening reception will take place 17 October at 2.30 pm and the fair will be open for the public 18-20 October daily 10 am – 8 pm.

Expect world class tribal rugs and textiles at this fair and meetings with hardcore collectors. San Francisco in October is also world class.
