Tehran Rug Gallery RUG NAME: 1940 Tehran from Central Persia, 210 x 137 cm GALLERY: Tehran CATEGORY: Persian AGE: 1940 ID(Jozan): no. 2888 DESCRIPTION: Carpet No. (Type and Reference): 0046 DO46
DESCRIPTION OF DESIGN AND HISTORY:
Teheran was made the capital of Persia by the Qajar Shahs and has remained so since. Both under the Qajars and the Pahlavis, imperial workshops were established there, the high point of whose production was under the first Pahlavi emperor, Reza the Great who ruled from 1926 to 1942.
The powerful proportions of the mihrab in this striking Teheran are accentuated by the wide, flattened prayer arch of scrolling magenta and pink roses, the resulting broad expanse of the prayer field superbly exploited to bring out the dramatic splendour of the focal Tree-of-Life arrangement. This unique example is woven using the emboss technique. The attribution of certain rugs and carpets to Teheran has always been somewhat tentative in the literature, with A. Cecil Edwards noting in his great work The Persian Carpet, published in 1953 but compiled during the 1940s period, that the city which is now capital of Persia ´was never an important weaving centre...the industry ceased to exist some twenty years ago´. This item, inscribed as knotted in Teheran is therefore of considerable art-historical importance and testifies to the heights reached by the master-weavers of the city during the short period it flourished.
