RUG NAME: Non-Turkmen Central Asian Jajim GALLERY: Central Asian flatweaves CATEGORY: Kilims,Flatweaves AGE: Late 19th century ID(Jozan): no. 3042 DESCRIPTION: Such flatweave are virtually unknown in the traditional 'rug book' literature. Books with enthnographic slant on the textile traditions of Central Asia have illustrated a few examples of this type of weaving, but with little compartive analysis in terms of daitng these examples as determined by color and design. Given the continuity of patterning and the long traditions on which these designs are based, one is left to examine color and weave as indicators of age.
The palette is not dark at all and much contrast is evident here, with a clear lemon yellow hue, two shades of madder red, and indigo blue. Earlier examples seem to exhibit a coarser weave than later pieces. All the colors here are derived from natural dyes.
The condition is good, with no holes or re-weaves. Such weavings consist of narrow bands sewn togehter, joined on the horizontal axis. This weaving consists of six bands.
