Tent rug (arkila kerka)
Origin: Mali, West Africa, Mopti.
Size: 5'2"X14'1" Photo shows 2/3
Age: early 20th c.
Wool weft. Warp: cotton. Natural indigo& brick. Undyed ivory.
Plain weave with spot brocading and twining. Woven in six strips, assembled off the loom.The black and white section is also woven separately (called Cigarette).
Condition: very good.
This was used as a tent divider hung horozontally in the tent.. Specific designs for different tribes; this one was probably woven by men of the Peul tribe.The indigo blue dye is native and highly valued.
A similar one called "wedding blanket" is in the Museum de Kulturen, Basel.
