Dimensions 66x44ins 168x112cm
Composition wool on silk base with silk highlights
Condition excellent
Isfahan is one of the most beautiful and important cities in Persia. Many of the finest Safavid buildings, still greatly admired all over the world, date from the period when Shah Abbas established it as his capital city in 1598. Isfahan has produced many of the splendours of those and later times although following the transfer of power to Mashad in the 1700s it was not until the 1920s that large-scale workshop production was reintroduced to the city by workers brought in from Kashan. Traditionally Isfahan rugs and carpets are woven on silk foundations with a close weave achieved using the Persian knot. This piece is true to that tradition and touchings of silk providing delightful highlights throughout the rug. The cream/ivory field is the ideal background on which to show the complex tendril design - drawn and executed so beautifully.
