18th Century MIHALICCIK (W. ANATOLIAN) FRAGMENT - TWICE PUBLISHED BY GANTZHORN
Anatolian Rug Gallery

RUG NAME: MIHALICCIK (W. ANATOLIAN) FRAGMENT - TWICE PUBLISHED BY GANTZHORN
GALLERY: Anatolian
CATEGORY: Anatolian
AGE: 18th Century
ID(Jozan): no. 4758
DESCRIPTION: Both books by Volkmar Gantzhorn (THE CHRISTIAN ORIENTAL CARPET, Germany 1991, and his later publication, ORIENTAL CARPETS, Germany 1998) present this carpet in ill. 496, page 363. Both Gantzhorn and the gentleman from whom I acquired the piece called it Bergama.
Gantzhorn places it into what he defines as "Group C VI: Bergama Coffered-Form Carpets," and makes reference to it having appeared in an exhibition in Istanbul in 1984. Quite by coincidence, when I showed it to a Turkish dealer in Istanbul, I discovered it was he who had originally handled it long ago. He more specifically attributed it to the village of Mihaliccik.
It is mounted on secured, doubled linen and the whole piece is 41" X 54" (104cm X 136cm).
As documented by Gantzhorn, it is an important rug in tracing the developments of earlier West Anatolian field designs. The coral, soft purple and yellow are wonderful.
