Description of Design and History :
This lovely rug, probably made in the Tschale Shotar district, provides an outstanding illustration of the capabilities of Bakhtiari village weavers when enabled, for whatever reason, to go beyond the economic restrictions imposed upon them by bazaar merchants to whom time and low overheads were the paramount consideration. The design is recognizably from the Bakhtiari repertoire and familiar to Western carpet collectors, who will probably have seen only its more commercial versions in recently exported examples. Here, a superb dye palette, quality of wool, and closeness of weave give the piece a memorable appearance. The majority of the dyes used are from vegetable sources – even slightly doubtful colours like the little-used pink and a dappled violet lack entirely the harshness and poor wool penetration usually revealed in synthetic shades, and may well be from natural dyes. The exquisite cream in the corner spandrels possesses an iridescent appearance which no photograph could reproduce. The intensity of the dark blue guard stripes is also exceptional, perfectly chosen to tress the sinuous complexities of the main border. An outstanding Bakhtiari whose relative youth is in no way detracting from its extremely decorative appearance.
