Description of Design and History :
The triple-medallion design has given its name to a well-defined group of Kazak rugs which were probably produced all over the south-west Caucasus. The medallions are usually two cream and one dark blue, or vice versa, and the field colour red. The motifs within the outer medallions shows a clear affinity with the medallions of the Lori-Pambak rugs. Few Kazaks of the antique period are so original in appearance as, this item, although its Kazak pedigree is unmistakeable, and there are traces in its design that connect it to the Lori Pambak group, while its splendid main border pattern is a vivid interpretation of one of the most effective repeat themes from the 19th Century Kazak vocabulary.
