DESCRIPTION OF DESIGN AND HISTORY:
Isfahan carpets knotted during the reign of the last king, Mohamad-Reza Pahlau occasionally achieved levels of excellence rarely matched in previous knotting areas. This carpet provides a strong case in point; it combines the very finest Isfahan wool on silk quality, usually found only in smaller sizes, with dimensions of quite exceptional magnitude, in which a considerable less demanding quality standard might be reasonable. Primarily, therefore, the piece is a knotting tour-de-force, an Isfahan of substantial intrinsic value deriving simply from the time and skill required in its making, and sheer volume of high caliber kork pile wool and natural silk foundation threads such work required.
In appearance, the carpet continues in the white field and central blue and gray medallion Isfahan style, the closeness of its weave permitting all the precision of Shah-abbasi ornamentation which is found in the best small examples, and which is an essential ingredient in the artistic success of the composition, transposed without compromise to the imposing format used here. An undemonstrative main border is held between four stripes, among which keep to the carpet’s visual impression.
