DESCRIPTION OF DESIGN AND HISTORY:
There can be little doubt that this superbly woven and beautifully coloured rug is the work of one of the Bakhtiari villages of the Chahar Mahal region of southern Persia, in the vicinity of the city of Isfahan. In general layout and the drawings in the border and guards bear a strong resemblance to rugs made in the village of Jolfa (famous Armenian village). The beautiful dark blue field is covered by a design of floral bouquets, rosettes and small flowers. Although the motifs do not posses the symmetry to be found in carpets woven in workshops, they are not without a certain rustic charm. Likely of Armenian, Russian influence which can be ascertained by the calligraphy at the bottom of the rug. Fairly wide and white the main border forms a striking contrast to the blue shades of the field; it is decorated with leaves, flowers and large rosettes. This is another example of a ´lane-gondjestki´ or birds nest design with a wonderful mix of colours. This carpet is in good condition and is an exceptionally fine floor rug for investment and collection.
