DESCRIPTION OF DESIGN & HISTORY :
A pervasive foliate tendency (distinctly feathery in places), is combined with a richly expressive palette in which dark rose-red, “verdure” shades of blue and green and, especially in this carpet, a dramatic yet always harmonious use of various yellows, to create the wonderfully elegant, refined look shared by both pieces. The design of the carpet is similarly comparable to the prayer rug in its consistent inventiveness, fluent control and the undisturbed logic of its development. A sense of uncluttered space in the scallop-edged ogival medallion, generated partially through design clarity, partially by the graphic effect of the thematic yellow palmettes, is placed in stimulating contrast against the dark blue field of interlocking rose, blue and turquoise leaf-fronds which constitute a most ingenious and spectacular version of the Herati-repeat. The tre-foil medallion pendants display that concentrated ornamental richness which highly compressed, multi-faceted subsidiary motifs often produce in the finest Tabriz works, while the quartered-medallion corner pieces add immensely to the regal splendour of the field as a whole.
