RUG NAME: 1890 Silk Tabriz from Northwest Persia, 167 x 112 cm
GALLERY: Tabriz
CATEGORY: Persian
AGE: 1890
ID(Jozan): no. 2877
DESCRIPTION: Carpet No. (Type and Reference): 0417 SH23477

DESCRIPTION OF DESIGN & HISTORY:
Silk prayer rugs of this period, in the open mihrab approach illustrated here, are often attributed to Haji Jalili, and it may well be that the silk carpets knotted in his workshop employed this format. A fabric of exceptional fineness and delicacy results from the use of extremely close knotting and silk of superb quality, clipped very short to reveal every detail in the design. The gradated light madder prayer field, its simplicity of shape being a vital element in the rug’s elegance, is decorated only with two columns that rise from the base of the field, each culminating in a finely constructed finial, these reciprocated by an exquisite floral-filigree mosque-lamp, suspended from a long white ribbon – again, the mixture of total simplicity and extreme refinement in this lamp design proves memorably successful. Such daring design effects in the field are set in spandrels and borders of dazzling intricacy and richness. Clarity of detail, however, is consistent, making the main border or arabesque and octofoil palmettes particularly beautiful when examined closely. The ice-blue minor borders with their rose-red floral repeats are also worthy of attention, substantially contributing to the bejewelled character of the frame. A rare and very accomplished silk rug, of considerable artistic merit.
