1940 1940 Djosan from West Persia, 156 x 100 cm Jozan Rug Gallery RUG NAME: 1940 Djosan from West Persia, 156 x 100 cm GALLERY: Jozan CATEGORY: Persian AGE: 1940 ID(Jozan): no. 2873 DESCRIPTION: Carpet No. (Type and Reference): 0368 TH22228
DESCRIPTION OF DESIGN AND HISTORY:
Use of the Turkish knot identifies this high quality carpet as Josan work, despite its typical Arak double-wefted structure. A clear rose ground eight-pointed medallion is effectively accentuated against an ultramarine field of red, green, and peach flowerheads and stems, which are densely organized without being fussy. Rose ground corner spandrels are nicely judged in their scale to stress further the comparatively small medallion, as well as to suggest a more expansive field area than the zaronim format actually permits. The rose dye of the border has a dustier, softer quality to the roseate shades of the field, and carries an unusual tendril meander in green connecting an unobtrusive rosette repeat; the Hamadan influence is unmistakable in this spare border design. Parchment-white minor borders and pale green guard stripes blend harmoniously with the overall visual concept. The pile wool is of kork quality, which substantially enhances the appeal of the piece, while the relative coarseness of the knotting (when compared to the Sarouks and Malayers of this caliber) is a Josan hallmark, resulting from combining the Turkish knot with double-wefting.
