DESCRIPTION OF DESIGN AND HISTORY:
Open field designs are a recurrent element in Tabriz rugs of the second half of the last Century. It is more than likely that such smaller rugs in the style predated the great Haji Jalili open-field creations and in consequence probably derived from before "The Revival Period" of Tabriz carpet making, historically initiated approximately around 1880. The majority of such early medallion and open field examples are in wool with a coppery ground colour. The existence of this fine silk item of comparable style is interesting, although hardly surprising. The silk pile exquisitely harmonised vegetable colours and meticulous detail perceptible within even the least insignificant ornament, give the piece a sumptuous character quite different to the more rudimentary open field woolen rugs; a richly bejewelled and gold-patterned book cover is strongly recalled by the item΄s decorative approach and its traditional Koran-binding ogive-an-spandrel arrangement. The outward-facing light blue palmettes of the main border provide an especially beautiful final touch to this flawlessly elegant antique silk rug.
