RUG NAME: 1898 Laver Kerman from Northeast Persia, 228 x 146 cm
GALLERY: Raver Kerman
CATEGORY: Persian
AGE: 1898
ID(Jozan): no. 2746
DESCRIPTION: Carpet No. (Type and Reference): 16009 SH16009

DESCRIPTION OF DESIGN AND HISTORY:
The western trade designation ‘Laver’ is an incorrect form of the name Ravar, the weaving centre situated northeast of Kerman, adjacent to the Lut desert. Ravar has long been the origin of some of the finest of Kerman products. The historical explanation appears to be that during the wars of the late 19th century much of Kerman was destroyed and a large part of the population, among them many carpet weavers, fled to Ravar. Although the weavings are characteristic of Kerman, the high quality rugs produced in Ravar soon gained recognition and the workshops founded their own tradition.

Although incorrect, the term ‘Laver’ has become so firmly entrenched in the trade that it has even been used as a designation for high quality products of other provenances.

This 1898 Laver-Kerman example has a cream field in which the tree-of-life design is portrayed. The main emphasis of the carpet is the tree of life which has three sets of flowering branches that extend to the entire field. You can find hibiscuses and lilies amongst the foliage. The field is framed by a cream main border, one steel blue primary guard border and two crimson secondary guard borders.

This carpet was commissioned by Sir Roknoldoleh in 1316 (Year of the Hejira) which is equivalent to 22nd May 1898 (Source: Oriental Rugs Volume 1 by Ian Bennett, Published in 1981), to commemorate his becoming the judge of the High Court and Minister of Commerce in the states of Khorasan and Sistan, East Persia.

This example is for investment and art collectors.
