DESCRIPTION OF DESIGN AND HISTORY:
This carpet is from SH. Sameyeh Pte Ltdīs private collection (See Reference Below). Carpets in the highly individual Bijar weave encompass a plethora of design styles and colour schemes, many seemingly unconnected; the weave was obviously employed in varying environments ranging from urban workshops to the tents of pastoral nomads. This handsome piece might easily be taken as a Sarouk at face value and betrays not the slightest rustic tendency; it has sophistication comparable to the workshop Sennehs. Urns, Vase motifs, ornamental palmettes and accompanying vegetal elements are integrated in a complex all over "Endless Repeat", which is intricate without being fussy. The drawing of the palmette main border possesses a more distinct Kurdish character, with a spontaneous vigour enlivens its otherwise overt workshop uniformity.
