DESCRIPTION OF DESIGN & HISTORY:
This superbly colourful carpet is worked in the “relief” technique, with the pattern elements showing a higher cut to their nap than the close-clipped pile of their backgrounds, this being shortest of all in the black areas of the field and border. Such “relief pile” items are normally described simply as Sarouk; the Josan attribution makes greater sense of a design approach and a solid weave that is recognizably different to the mainstream Sarouk style. Moreover, Josan weavers normally use the Turkish knot, although employing the standard two-wefted Arak foundation. Both geographically and technically, therefore, Josan bridges the gap between Malayer and Arak. The medallion-and-corner design of this example possesses a certain Malayer flavour, the camel ground central lozenge enclosing a black panel with a raised flower and stem arrangement. The medallion is displayed forcefully against the black field, vehicle for an exuberant, high-pile floral theme in a brilliant array of colours, various rose-pink and light turquoise shades predominating. Rose-red and sky-blue spandrels lead to the remarkable black-ground border, where a relief pattern of rosettes and other floral devices on a double meander is executed in the full range of clear, strong colours introduced in the main panel; the effect is extraordinary.
