DESCRIPTION OF DESIGN AND HISTORY:
The town of Gendje was called Elizabethpol under the Tzars and is now known as Kirovabad, the principal town of the Soviet Socialist Republic of Azerbaydzhanskaya (Soviet Azerbaijan). It is almost centrally placed between the Caucasian weaving areas of Kazak, Karabagh and Shirvan and acted as an important marketing centre to the rugs of those places and produced its own weavings in a style which shows the considerable influence of the major areas surounding it. This lovely piece is a typical long Gendje rug with contrasting stripes containing “S” motifs. The tree of life repeated border in lovely light brown colour gives a beautiful combination to the main design. This piece has superb colours. The colour range and motifs are similar to those on Shahsavan Tribal rugs from Moghan.
