1930 1930 Malayer from West Persia, 188 x 136 cm Malayer Rug Gallery RUG NAME: 1930 Malayer from West Persia, 188 x 136 cm GALLERY: Malayer CATEGORY: Persian AGE: 1930 ID(Jozan): no. 2656 DESCRIPTION: Carpet No. (Type and Reference): 0136 SH686
DECRIPTION OF DESIGN AND HISTORY:
Unmistakeably related to the Sarouk style (indistinguishable from it in design), this fine quality Malayer does not suffer by comparison. The impression of denser knotting technique than would be found in a Sarouk (created by the single-wefted ground weave), and the closer clip to the kork pile that intensifies the clarity of detail and contour, may be said to make the piece more distinguished than some of its design prototypes. A brown abrash runs the width of the rug, passing through the centre of the ogival, rose-ground medallion of lively white scrolling tendrils. A pair of vases at each end of the surmey-blue field has bird-head embellishments suspended from each side, an ornamental conceit that appears in several Sarouks. Two similar vases, with parabolic floral garlands, flank the central ogive. The striking ivory corner spandrels, with their rose tendril schemes, are unusual, a chromatic flourish perfectly suited to the style. A sky-blue border of yellow, light green, dark blue and pale rose floral and stem-meander elements is interrupted by the central band of abrash, in addition to a delightful light green abrash in the upper border. This unique example is featured in SH. Sameyeh Catalogue No. 1, issue 1982, page 84, plate 54.
