DESCRIPTION OF DESIGN AND HISTORY:
The prevailing blue tonality of this attractive Tabriz is unusual; it gives the piece a certain Kirman character, further compounded by the open-field medallion setting. The delicate medallion pendants and four floral sprays extending from the medallion are evocatively contrasted with the more powerful palmette corner decorations, and the undulating tendril pattern of the light blue border; the slightly lighter powder blue of the field is subtly emphasized by this border colour. With its uncluttered central design and rich surrounding ornamentation, together with its exploration of the blue dye shades, this is a most decorative work, of distinctly jewel-like appearance.
