DESCRIPTION OF DESIGN & HISTORY:
The Afshar of Kerman is the tribe that wove this carpet. In this particular Afshari rug we can recognise the influence of Azerbaijan both in the design and weaving technique. The Afshar tribe is one that never produces big rugs because of its nomadic nature. It is a poor tribe that often prays for rain from god so that there would be bread for them to eat. This desire for rain is shown in their patterns in their carpet. In this particular carpet you would see that the medallions are decorated with patterns that look like human forms raising their hands up to the air as if praying to god. Surrounding the medallions are small flower motifs in a shape of a pyramid that symbolises rain. This excellent design is framed with three guard strips which are decorated in geometric design.
