1890 1890 Herat from Northwest Afghanistan 192 x 122 cm Afghan Balouch Rug Gallery RUG NAME: 1890 Herat from Northwest Afghanistan 192 x 122 cm GALLERY: Afghan Balouch CATEGORY: Balouch AGE: 1890 ID(Jozan): no. 2611 DESCRIPTION: Carpet No. (Type and Reference): 0054 DO54
DESCRIPTION OF DESIGN AND HISTORY:
Herat is a city of northwestern Afghanistan, formerly a major city of Persia. Herat was among the oldest weaving centres of Persia. Some Safavid rugs of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries have been attributed to Herat, though these attributions are disputed. Many of these carpets contain early forms of the Herati pattern. Currently, Herat is a major collection and market centre for Baluchi rugs woven in the area.
The Herati pattern is a very common repeat field design consisting of a flower centred in a diamond with curving lanceolate leaves located outside the diamond and parallel to each side. The lanceolate leaves sometimes have the appearance of fish. There are many versions of the Herati pattern, curvilinear and geometric, simple and complex.
One feature common in the Herati border is the palmettes or florets with divided tendrils at the base and lanceolate leaves hanging from the tendrils. The design of the border in this beautiful example is curvilinear. This magnificent example is a perfect selection for collectors and carpet lovers and is good for investment.
