DESCRIPTION OF DESIGN & HISTORY:
Nain, like Qum, began making carpets, of definable style, during this century only. The first products of the town, of which this is an outstanding example, were reckoned among the finest in Persia, far more individual than the majority of the more recent Nain works. Structurally, this carpet is similar to the modern Nains, with a cotton ground-weave, kork pile and extremely fine knotting; the proximity of Isfahan is obvious. The same may be said of its design, although some colours, and aspects of the ornamentation, are rather different to the Isfahan approach.
This example has Afshan design (Shah Ahbasi) all over. Decorated with flowers and leaves, same as borders.
A handsome carpet, subtle and intelligent in design and rich in colour.
