1918 1918 Antique Laver Karman from South Persia, 241 x 154 cm Raver Kerman Rug Gallery RUG NAME: 1918 Antique Laver Karman from South Persia, 241 x 154 cm GALLERY: Raver Kerman CATEGORY: Persian AGE: 1918 ID(Jozan): no. 2602 DESCRIPTION: Carpet No. (Type and Reference): 0042 DO42
DESCRIPTION OF DESIGN AND HISTORY:
The western trade designation Laver is an incorrect form of the name Ravar, the weaving centre situated northeast of Kerman, adjacent to the Lut desert. Ravar has long been the origin of some of the finest of Kerman products. The historical explanation appears to be that during the wars of the late 19th century much of Kerman was destroyed and a large part of the population, among them many carpet weavers, fled to Ravar. Although the weavings are characteristic of Kerman, the high quality rugs produced in Ravar soon gained recognition and the workshops founded their own tradition.
Although incorrect, the term Laver has become so firmly entrenched in the trade that it has even been used as a designation for high quality products of other provenances.
While the world-leaders photograph displays an impression of the design precision and drawing flair of this remarkable carpet (as well as its ambitious standards of verisimilitude, virtuoso patterning and the wonderful clarity of its very extensive dye range), much of the work´s achievement is based firmly in its astonishing quality of knotting, the fineness of the fabric being a crucial element in the unforgettable impression the carpet makes upon initial first-hand encounter.
This masterpiece dated 1337 A.H. (Year of the Hejira) is equivalent to 7th October 1918, the first quarter of 20th century. This Laver-Kerman is an example woven in order of the Kings of Persia. We can see on the magnificent carpet 54 figures of famous world leaders and each figure is accompanied with number, which corresponds to the numbers in the border. By request, I can send 54 pictures of each of the leaders, their names, and the numbers. This example is absolutely for investment and should be hung as a tapestry on the wall. There are some special figures like Prophet Moses, King Solomon etc, in the carpet.
