DESCRIPTION OF DESIGN AND HISTORY:
The comparatively small workshops of the Mohtashem family of Kashan established their reputation in the late 19th century and their carpet, unmistakable to the carpet specialist in composition, material and weave, and in shades of colour, are sought after rarities of the highest value. The workshops ceased production in the early 20th century since when the Mohtashem label has also been applied to other Kashans similar in style, colour and fineness of weave, made in designs taken from the whole Persian repertoire. In this piece the field design derives from the north-west Persian tree motif.
