DESCRIPTION OF DESIGN AND HISTORY:
Lurs, Lors. An ancient people speaking an Iranian language, in the Zagros mountains of southwestern Persia. They are tribally organized and still to a great extent pastoral nomads. The Fayli Lurs of Luristan (principal town, Khorramabad) are usually divided into those living east of the Zagros (pish-ekuh) and those on the western slopes (pusht-e kuh). The Bakhtiari also belong to the Lurs. Southeast of Luristan, in Fars, are other Lur tribes: the Mamasani, the Boyer Ahmadi and the Kuhgilu Lurs. There are also Lurs settled in the area of Varamin. Their pile rug designs are often all-over hexagonal cells filled with geometricized blossoms derived from the Mina Khani pattern, or all-over diamond cells, each filled with a geometricized tree of life. Some rugs are woven with symmetric knots while others are woven with asymmetric knots.
The Lurs weave a variety of functional tribal pieces: saddle bags, salt bags, torbas, animal trappings and carpets, using different flatweave structures. Some of their bags combine soumak, tapestry weave and knotted pile within the same piece.
