DESCRIPTION OF DESIGN AND HISTORY:
The powerful proportions of the mihrab in this striking Tehran are accentuated by the wide, flattened prayer arch of scrolling magenta and pale green leaves, the resulting broad expanse of the prayer field superbly exploited to bring out the dramatic splendour of the focal Tree-of-Life arrangement. The attribution of certain rugs and carpets to Tehran has always been somewhat tentative in the literature, with A. Cecil Edwards noting in his great work The Persian Carpet, published in 1953 but compiled during the 1940s period, that the city which is now capital of Persia "was never an important weaving centre... the industry ceased to exist some twenty years ago." This item, inscribed as knotted in Tehran is therefore of considerable art-historical importance and testifies to the heights reached by the master-weavers of the city during the short period it flourished.
