Central Asian Textiles - exhibition at the Nickle Arts Museum until 26 April 2008

The Nickle Arts Museum is located in Calgary, Canada

Click to enlarge Central Asia is home to a number of Tribal groups with rich and varied textile traditions. Many of these speak to Tribal identity, nomadic lifestyle, or recent negotiations with urban life. From silk weaving, to wrapped reeds, fine embroidery and knotted pile weaving, the textiles of Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan are as technically sophisticated, as they are aesthetically compelling.

The Nickle Arts Museum has a small but significant collection of Central Asian textiles. Curated by Michele Hardy, this exhibition showcases a number of stunning new acquisitions from the area including a forty-five foot tent band woven by Turkman nomads.
