Anatolian rugs in Transylvanian Churches
Exhibition at the Sakip Sabanci Museum, Emirgan, Istanbul 19 April to 19 August 2007
The focus in this exhibition is on Ottoman rugs made in Anatolia
between the 16th-18th century.
Many of the rugs were made in West Anatolia
but kept and hung in Christian churches of
Transylvania (part of Romania and Hungary).
Curators for this expedition are Michael Franses and Nazan Olcer, the Director of the Sakip Sabanci Museum.
This exhibition of 41 antique Anatolian rugs has been organised in co-operation with the National Brukenthal Museum in Sibiu, the Evangelical Church A.C. of Romania, the Romanian Ministry of Culture and Cults, the National Museum of Art in Bucharest, the Hungarian National Museum, the Museum of Applied Arts in Budapest and the Museum of Islamic Art in Berlin.
Published to coincide with this exhibition will be a fully illustrated catalogue.
Stefano Ionescu has also published new expanded editions of his book
"Antique Ottoman Rugs in Transylvania", which fully catalogues all the rugs in the churches.
